NICHE this Week: 5 Things You Need to Know

August 12, 2019

As you kick off the week, here are five things making news in the cannabis industry:

  • New Blog: Pardon Me: Canada Enacts No-fee, Expedited Pardons for Simple Possession of Cannabis; Canadians now have a free and quicker way to apply for pardons for simple cannabis possession. However, critics argue the move does not go far enough and continue to urge Ottawa to expunge those criminal records.

  • Research News: A new study considers the attitudes and behaviours of users of the Strainprint app and explores the potential of medical cannabis to replace or reduce use of other prescribed drugs. The research notes that cost and lack of insurance coverage remain two key hurdles to clear.

  • “The micro community is very discouraged — it doesn’t seem a priority for Health Canada." As the Calgary Herald reports, small cannabis growers in Alberta face roadblocks in going legal.

  • ICYMI: “Alberta has more stores than all the other provinces combined.” A more bountiful supply of legal cannabis has pushed the number of licensed cannabis stores in Alberta past 250. Read more in the Calgary Herald.

  • Food for Thought: “Growing outside is a dream." From lower costs to growing “au naturel” under the sun, Bloomberg takes a look at the benefits of outdoor-grown cannabis.
